Miss Havisham's January Appointments
It certainly has been awhile, hasn't it? It's been a busy few months for Miss Havisham's Curiosities and now we're ready to return to you, our dearies. New year, new social calendar. Should you find yourself in the San Francisco area January 20 and 21, we'll be at the Edwardian Ball hawking our snarky wares. Come up, introduce yourself. We've met some of our new favorite people at our pop ups. Ask us to tea, we probably won't say no...
Sunday, January 1-ongoing
"Facial hair has always been more than a matter of fashion. Impeccably coiffed or wild and unkempt, a beard or mustache says a lot about a man and who he aspires to be. This exhibition explores how facial hair styles were used to craft the identities of historical figures and fictional characters."
Sunday, January 1-January 8
I'm fairly certain this was made for me. Garden, night, pretty lights, pop-up restaurant...you had me at garden.
Monday, January 2-January 4
I'm so excited to see this movie. As a true Dario Argento fan, the trailer made me giddy. An homage to the horror genius of the 70's, this one promises to deliver on the costumes, the effects and, of course, the necessary campy sex magic.
Friday, January 6-ongoing
Festive drinks? Prohibition cocktails? What better way to end your week?
Friday, January 6-ongoing
Like food? Of course you do. Enjoy this walking tour of downtown's food scene. I hear all the kids like going out in the downtown.
Saturday, January 7 & 8
If you're not familiar with Allis Markham and Prey Taxidermy in downtown LA, get familiar. Taxidermy is a thorny issue in California and Allis is one of the few taxidermists here allowed to work with birds of prey. She restores pieces for the Natural History museum and lucky you, she also offers classes from time to time. This one is for newbies.
Saturday, January 7
Another unusual offering from the masters of unusual, Atlas Obscura. Doesn't it make you want to smash pottery?
Sunday, January 8
The one, the only. Confession: I've never actually made it all the way through. I usually head to the vintage furniture/housewares. Shame on me. I need more vintage jewelry in my life. #2017goals.
Sunday, January 8
"Where extraterrestrial intelligence, telepathy, the Interplanetary Parliament, and yoga intersect." Be still my heart.
Friday, January 13-27
Los Angeles' version of restaurant week. Discount meals, special menus and a chance to try a new restaurant. Truth: I never really took advantage of Restaurant Week in New York but I'm really going to try to do this one because I did not get this ass eating salad.
Sunday, January 15
I don't have to tell you that this is my absolute favorite flea market in LA and there are plenty flea markets to choose from. I've gotten some real gems at Long Beach, including our creepy good luck Thai baby. Read all about him here. We really should have sent out a birth announcement.
Saturday, January 21
Wolves that you can play with. Real. Actual. Alive. Fucking. Wolves. Dance with wolves, be a woman who runs with wolves...ok. If we weren't going to be at The Edwardian Ball in San Francisco that weekend, I would be snuggling wolves and trying to shove wolf pups in my purse to take home.
Saturday, January 21-January 22
Once again, I will miss this but don't let my unfortunate busy schedule deter you from checking out Prey's classes. Again, people, it's ethical taxidermy done in California which is rare. Also Allis is crazy talented and has a lovely sense of style. What more do you want?
Monday, January 23-January 28
There are many chances to see the funny, the brilliant, the goddamned brother of Amy himself. Don't be a dumbass, go. That family is a national treasure.
Friday, January 27
That tiny strip in Burbank known as Magnolia Park welcomes the young, the tired and the tragically vintage to wander the street, dine at food trucks, and shop shop shop. There are some fantastic shops and it was one of the first areas I spent a lot of time in when I left the mean streets of Brooklyn for the sunny ones of the valley.
Saturday, January 28
Judge not, jerks because I'm going to take a flower arranging class and I'm going to do it wearing a caftan and blue eye shadow. Then I'm going to go home and read The Feminine Mystique and Our Bodies Ourselves because I love the 70's and I love flowers. If you care to join me for the flower arranging part of my day, you know where you can find me.
Happy 2017, lovelies! Enjoy yourselves for gods sake.
